Details: June 6, 2015 at 6:30 am
Launch Location:
PWC Beach, Lake Mead NRA.
Please be ready to leave the beach at 6:30 am
Caution: This is not a special event, race or a coached session and is not covered under any insurance for USMS, therefore you do not need to be a member of USMS to participate. Swim is posted here as a courtesy for like minded swimmers (nuts) to experience a different part of the lake. However, you must get pre-approval from Coach Kara to join us. We want to make sure you can do the distance and that we have enough support kayaks for the group.
Directions:
From Boulder City, enter Lake Mead NRA. Take the first turn off for Hemenway Harbor. Continue straight on this road. As you near the lake, you will pass 2 small structures on your left. Turn Left for PWC BEACH LAUNCH AREA.
Take the first Right- this becomes a dirt road. Low clearance vehicles are ok, just watch for rocks.
We will launch near the fishing pier.
Suggestions on What to Bring:
Cold drinks (small cooler is OK)
Nutrition of your choice: Gu's, gels, fruit, snacks etc.
SUNSCREEN!
2 pair of goggles
You can bring: wetsuit, fins, buoy, snorkel, arm floaties, tubes rafts or a small motor. This isn't a race!
Depending on your level of fitness and experience with endurance swimming, the general rule of thumb is that slower swimmers will want to eat/drink every 15-30 minutes after the first hour. Faster swimmers, stay hydrated as needed and eat typically after 2 hours. You do sweat when you swim so keep that in mind. The kayakers will hold your stuff. Please label it and bag it if necessary.
Who is Swimming?
Members of the Fabulous Las Vegas swimming community, people who can do the distance. This is a FUN Adventure swim with no lanes, no lines, no buoys! (also, no attitudes, a-holes or whiners allowed!) All levels are welcome, but you must be able to swim the distance. Average pace will be 2:10/100yd to 1:30/100 yd. -if you don't know what that means, take a stroke clinic! :)
Emergency Plan:
Kayaks will be equipped with marine band radios and rescue tubes. Rangers at Lake Mead will be contacted if rescue is needed.
Safety, Safety and more safety...
We have an impeccable safety record, here's why:
-Swimmers are respectful and listen to kayak/coach instructions.
-Swimmers swim together and look out for one another. What a great community!
-Swimmers are prepared to do the distance.
-Swimmers wear neon swim caps which makes them highly visible!
-Swimmers know NOT to swim if they are sick, unable to do the distance or are having an off day.
Tentative Route:
1. Head NORTH: Cross Harbor as a group.
2. TURN EAST: Round the island, regroup at saddle on N side. (optional resting point if anyone wants to cut swim short.)
3. CONTINUE EAST, around the island.
4. Regroup if necessary at saddle.
4. EAST to return point and SOUTH to PWC beach as a group.
Distances are approximate due to our shrinking lake levels. There is a shorter route (no judgement if you take it) and a longer route. If you plan on doing the shorter route, bring a hat or light cover up as you'll need to wait on shore until group returns.
Allow up to 2.5 hours for swim time and stops. Swimmers must stay with group and kayak escort.
If you know someone who would like to paddle, please contact us!
